For safety reasons, medium and large size hunting knives are best stored in a sheath, which are not only necessary for fixing the blade in the “stowed” position, but also prevent dirt, dust and moisture from entering the metal surface.
The main requirements that high-quality sheaths for a hunting knife must meet are durability, usability and reliability. All of these characteristics have a wooden scabbard.
For greater aesthetics, you can use the combined version - the finished product looks just fine. Stacked wood and leather sheaths can be made with your own hands, and it will not take much time.
Making the foundation
From a suitable species of wood with a beautiful texture, we cut rectangular blanks with sides of 2.5x3 cm and a thickness of 2-3 mm, as well as two blanks 1-1.5 cm thick. After that, the resulting rectangles must be processed with sandpaper.
Then we cut out the “gaskets” from rubber with dimensions of 2.5x3 cm. We glue the bar from the prepared elements and fix it with joinery clamps in two planes. We wait some time until the glue is completely dry.
Handwork
At the next stage, we process the whetstone on a belt grinder. Next, we cut the workpiece lengthwise into two halves, then with the help of a milling cutter we make a notch under the blade and again glue them together.
After that, we again process the wooden sheath with sandpaper, giving them the desired shape. Then it remains only to sew a leather case. All stages of the work can be seen in the video on our website.
